I've been painting birds in class and also with the Hill Country PAC and Susan Thumm. Birds are a lot of fun...they are so endearing and add a bit of magic to our world. This first little bird started as a sketch on porcelain. He was inspired by a photo I saw on the internet in search for birds. You will see that in this first fire I just painted in some underlying colors.

Here is my little bird ready for the third fire. I've got his branch that he is sitting on painted but I really would like to have something over him...I've thought about leaves...flowers...just stems...and then I came up with the branch pictured. But I know I need more than just the part pictured...not sure what to do??? I think I will wipe out the overhead branch and fire and then play Open to suggestions! >^..^<

I haven't fired this yet, but I think this will be the next step, Elaine. Cherryl had shown me a really cool way of painting limbs by using mineral oil over paint. but on this tree trunk it seemed to be too large and after several tries I decided to soften and smooth brush strokes instead. I'm thinking I can fire this and then add paint and try the mineral oil or maybe turp over the paint idea then. I also want to add some branches with leaves over and around the little bird for background. I'm thinking I may just paint the leaves brown/ soft yellow as in the third ex.above. The one green leaf is a sign of spring We are ALL ready for spring!!! See what you think...

Here is the progression and I think final fire for this little bird. I apologize that the photo doesn't show up the colors or Fools Gold well. This plate tells a story...the first signs of spring. The focus is the little bird sitting on what looks like a broken limb...but the limb does have one green leaf...first signs of spring You will see that I added a couple of branches above the little bird but I wanted them to be the winter left overs. I spiced them up just a bit with Fools Gold and even though you really cannot see it, it looks nice! The trunk of the tree I added more color and splotches of Fools Gold and then went over it all with crumpled saran wrap. OH, you cannot see this, but the background color is a soft green.
