Base for Gold is a hard enamel, made to be used on hard glazed china, but verstile as it can be used
also on soft glaze such as Bone China or Pickard China.
Usually fired at .018 but can be fired as hot as .016
Raised Base for Gold will take repeated firing!
Base for Gold can be covered with Liquid Bright Gold.
Limit to two fires: one paste fire and one gold fire.
If your luster and gold have been thoroughly dried in the oven, you can put raised
paste on before firing the piece. This taked confidence and practice to do because
it is most difficult to correct a mistake on top of the UNFIRED luster or gold!
How to Mix Base for Gold
Step 1: Pour the Base for Gold onto a clean tile. Make it into a pile, make a hole in the pile.
Add Silkscreen oil or Dark Balsam of Copabia to the center and mix. You could use Enamel Medium of your choice. The key here is not to make the
Base for Gold too wet with oil. It should form into a ball and not stick
to your fingers. Store this in a clean jar.
Step 2: With a palette knife take out about the size of a large pea and thin with Turp. The Base should string, not peak and
leave and hard point! Test by making a scroll with it. It should not flatten out.
A drop of coal tar will give it more elasticity.
A 10/0 line can be sued to lay on the Base. for finer lines a needle tool can be used.
The Base Needs to be looser for dots, add a bit more turp for this. No points should be at the top of the dots!
Fire at .018 and in a large kiln not a jewelry kiln, letting the kiln cool before you open it!
