White Velvet is mixed with a water-based medium and applied to porcelain by pouncing or sponging and then is allowed to dry completely. white Velvet contains a pink vegetable dye so that it remains visible on white china. Once the White Velvet is dry, you use a wooden scratch out tool to cut designs into the white Velvet which exposes the white glazed finish beneath the White Velvet.
After you've completed the design the piece is then fired to .017. Do not fire hotter or the White Velvet will lose its effect. When removed from the kiln the piece now has a matte White Velvet finish with as shiny design.
There are a number of techniques to embellish White Velvet pieces - raised paste, gold, platinum, light-colored lustres, jeweling and painting in a main subject.
