I started to work on the rose study that Cherryl has been teaching in her workshops this year as my latest class project. I just love the colors Cherryl uses in this study! It also is a bit of a stretch for me...but I was sure I would learn a lot and I am What I would like to show you in this thread is the plate that I have been working on at home. When I do a class project I like to follow up the steps at home on my own. I'm not that great with line drawings though I do think they probably help with placement somewhat...I get a bit carried away. With this plate you can tell there were no line drawings...I just painted the roses and buds as I saw them. I wish I had come up with more of a curve but there will also be more leaves and that should help. Ready to go in the kiln, this will be fired @.017 - I love the way the ruby turns out! I'm hoping Cherryl will see - I'm pretty proud of my efforts on this piece! >^..^< Note the YELLOW roses!!! Cherryl's first fire from a workshop:

I have my second fire in the kiln today I'm sure I will have more than the four planned fires as I am adding layers with each fire. The color here is not showing up as well...I'm really looking forward to seeing the main pink and also the main yellow rose fired. I am sure I will need to add more color to my ruby roses, too as well as my leaves. There will also be more leaves added on the next fire. I'm holding my breath! >^..^<

I'm able to post my final fire today! Right out of the kiln These photos really do not do the paintings justice...but you can get the idea. On the top photo you see the painting I painted at home on my own. Below it is the photo of the painting I did in class with Cherryl. You can see my improvement with my painting but I also know I have a ways to go I learned so much from this study...it took me to another level for sure! I love the way the colors work together...and my yellow roses turned out yellow but with pecan, orange and yellow-red added I'm beginning to get depth in my painting...and my shadow leaves are getting better, too. My leaves are also much prettier... I'm getting better with using washes and adding darks. I love the composition of this study as well as the colors in the painting! What I will be working on is getting my colors deeper...you can see I didn't add as much black, for instance, to my ruby when painting at home as I did in class with Cherryl's help. I need to work on being a bit bolder with color. Over all I think this is the prettiest piece yet! >^..^<

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHERRYL'S STUDY "I was inspired by a painting by Professor Braunsdorf of Germany who painted in the 18th century in Meissen. The colors of this composition are beautiful. A challenge to paint from a masterpiece, I did not trace, doing my own thing, but looking at his original and trying to match the colors as closely as possible. I also loved the idea of what I would call a limited background - just a few shadows around the main design." Colors used: Soft Pink, soft Rose, Ruby Purple, Mixing Yellow, Pecan, Yellow Red, Blood Red, Deep Blue Green. Rosey Violet of Iron and Outlining Black First FireBegin by sketching or tracing the design onto porcelain. Main Pink Rose in the bouquet - Using Soft Pink with brush mixed with Blood Red. Add Mixing Yellow in areas as seen on photo. Secondary Rose and Side View Rose: Mixing Yello, Pecan and Yellow Red in centre of flower. Use a bit of Rosey Violet of Iron on the body of the flowers. Dark Ruby Roses: Paint roses mixed with a little bit of Black in brush. Wipe out with Blood Red on the brush. Stems: Rosey Violet of Iron and Antique Green Leaves: Chartreuse, Antique Green, Black Green, tipping them with Rosey Violet of Iron. Do not put in shadow leaves in this first fire. ALL FIRES ARE .018 BECAUSE OF THE MIXTURE OF COLORS. If you do this the colors will stay true.
