Special Ed was a very special cat that lived with Eric for awhile. She was one of Ralf's kittens and initially Eric thought Ed was a guy...until she had three kittens of her own. I asked Eric if he would send me photos of Ed. Here are some of his photos:

Preparing to paint I chose some colors to create a palette: This tile is in the kiln now to be fired @ .016 : I made a sketch from Eric's photo of Ed and have transferred that outline to a tile. I will start with Ed's eyes and the plan is to use the light colors on her fur in the first fire similar to what we did with Cherryl's elephant study using the primary colors on the first fire and then building on them. >^..^<

On this I really felt I just had to ad lib as I went along. My plan was to put in only the light areas for the most part and you see that once I started I got a little carried away! I hadn't planned on painting in any background but I also realized that if I wanted to create the look of fur I needed some background around Ed...also I needed to go ahead and wipe out Ed's whiskers which needed some background in order to do that. I'm pretty pleased though so far. This piece is now in the kiln. I plan on firing it @.017 since it is tans and browns. I think the next fire I will add some more dark areas but not get too carried away...and I believe this piece will only need two fires. I had to chuckle at Ed's ears...this cat does have big ears and they do seem a bit big in the painting...lol >^..^<

I have spent a bit of time adding color to Ed's fur...and then adding back in the fur markings with a special brush (Alama gave me an old brush she used and had messed up that does hair nicely) and a wipe out tool. I found the colors really faded with the first fire which was a bit of a surprise. I decided to wait about adding dark brown until this piece was fired.

Right out of the kiln. You can see the difference in the color!

After working on Ed I focused on the background. For the upper half of the painting I added more Dark Brown but this time I also added Violet mixed on my brush. I really like the color! For the lower half of the background I want to designate the folds. I will expand on this in another fire.
