I just received my copy of Helen Humes' new book "Past and Present". It is a wonderful collection of some of her favorite pieces.
I was drawn to her study of roses painted with Red Grape and Black Grape. It seems to me this will help me a bit with values. Here is my first effort:
I took my time with this and really like the dainty, soft design. I do see that while I am improving in painting values,
I still have lots of room for improvement So I thought I would try a second piece, using the same design for inspiration
but focusing on highlights and trying to get the darks a bit darker...here is my effort:
Because I played with the paint a bit more, my roses came out a bit fuzzy...and I didn't have the success with holding onto the highlights,
especially in the bowl of the roses which I create in the first steps. I also didn't have success with values much at all on this piece.
So my challenge I think is to use as few strokes as possible so that I don't "muddy" my highlights and in the second fire I tried a wash
that I wiped out and in essence I created fuzzy roses. Well...I thought it was a good idea but obviously not so much. I won't do that on the next piece.
So today I will try a third piece and take my time and try to get as much paint on in as few strokes as possible.
I'm sure you noticed the difference in the two pieces...I was looking at the same study photo in both...lol >^..^<
Here are the results of my third piece:
Cherryl liked this one the best because I was able to wipe out the highlights better on this one. >^..^<
